Press release: Urban Carbon Control expands with new software and smart CO₂ sensors

London, UK – September 11, 2025 – Urban Carbon Control (UCC), a participant in Second Derivative, a World Economic Forum’s guidance program, today announced the launch of its second service, Hyper Local, integrated with newly developed TRAP sensors for real-time CO2 measurements. This builds on UCC’s first offering, High Resolution, which maps CO2 fluxes from biogenic and anthropogenic sources using satellite data (10-30m resolution, hourly updates), empowering cities to monitor urban carbon dynamics with precision.

Building on UCC’s commitment to scalable, low-cost environmental solutions, UCC CO2 flux analysis combines ground-level sensor data with satellite imagery to provide hourly insights into CO2 dynamics, and enabling advanced machine learning models for flux analysis and assessment. This marks a significant evolution in urban climate monitoring and supports efforts to combat climate change through data-driven decision-making.

At the heart of the product are UCC’s self-developed TRAP sensors, compact devices (120mm x 60mm) designed for durable weather-protected deployment. Key specifications include:

– Accuracy and Precision: temperature (±0.3°C), Humidity (±2% RH), Pressure (±1 hPa), CO2 (±50 ppm + 5%).

– Operating Conditions: 0-50°C, 0-95% non-condensing humidity, 300 – 1100 hPa pressure.

– Power and Deployment: powered by a 6V 1W solar panel for indefinite operation in sunny conditions (2-6 days without sunlight, depending on season). Optional 6V 2W panel for enhanced charging.

Data is uploaded to the cloud every hour, allowing seamless integration with the software for real-time tracking of CO2 fluxes, heat effects, and enhanced vegetation index amongst others. The system is currently at proof-of-concept stage, with a working prototype already in place. Over the next few months, we will scale to large environments.

Looking ahead, UCC’s roadmap for the TRAP includes exciting upgrades such as IP67 compliance (protection against dust and water), and GPS integration.
