One million euros and we’re receiving a share of it!

Great news: at Urban Carbon Control, we’ve been awarded a Citylab010 grant to test our sensors and software in the city of Rotterdam.

And to think we almost didn’t submit our application, because we wondered whether a city jury would recognise the value of measuring CO₂ fluxes.*

These fluxes help us understand climate change more accurately, because they show exactly where CO₂ warms the climate – and where nature counteracts it. This gives the City of Rotterdam the ability to make decisions based on data, not assumptions.

What has been a no‑brainer for us from the very beginning, clearly isn’t obvious to everyone yet. Last year it sometimes felt like pushing a boulder uphill.

But wow  – our doubts were completely unfounded.

From the jury report: Urban Carbon Control introduces an innovative method of precision‑carbon mapping. It provides insight into less visible green corridors and potential CO₂ storage locations.

With these insights into emissions and urban greening, the project can contribute to more effective climate policy and a more sustainable living environment for Rotterdammers. The jury especially values the future potential of this plan, supporting policy decisions with long‑term positive effects on climate, health and quality of life.

We’re proud, grateful and excited that we can now take a real step forward in professionalising our work.

Thank you Gemeente Rotterdam and CityLab010 for this opportunity – we’ll make the most of it.

*) CO₂ fluxes are flows of CO₂ between natural or industrial areas. They show where CO₂ comes from and where it goes.

Plenty more where this pic came from. Stay tuned… 😊
